Welcome to Utrecht: The Secret of Holland

Enjoy our Tour Guide’s Introduction to Utrecht

Since Roman times, this area has been a strategic military border, a lively trading post, a sacred religious center, an important university town and a thriving transportation hub – there’s 2000 years of history to discover! In this special blog, veteran guide Jeffrey Scott Pearson shares his thoughts about the city.
Tourists often tell me about their impressions of the Netherlands, and almost every conversation ends up about our rich history, our quaint villages and charming people. I like that Holland plays to its strengths in this way; it’s realistic and practical, like the Dutch themselves.
Does Holland have delicious native food to enjoy? Not much. Does it offer a wide variety of climates and landscapes? Not really. Does the country have a huge city like Tokyo, Paris or London? No, there are hundreds of cities more populous than Amsterdam worldwide.
But the Netherlands has perfected the charming medieval town; they’re everywhere and amazing. Haarlem, Delft, Gouda, Leiden and a dozen more wonderful Dutch cities all look like a Renaissance painting and are well loved by the loyal citizens who call them home.

Utrecht: Holland’s Biggest Secret
Perhaps the most picturesque example of these authentic medieval towns is regal Utrecht, a beautiful city hardly known outside the Netherlands. It’s more than a thousand years older than any other city in the Randstad, which means a longer and more complicated history than its neighbors. Nonetheless, for visitors wanting the real ‘Dutch Experience’, Utrecht is the must-see secret of Holland.
Many of the 7000 visitors Utrecht receives each day come on a day trip from Amsterdam. While this is a perfectly acceptable way to see the major landmarks, ‘day trippers’ will miss out on some of the best aspects of the city, so an overnight stay is recommended if not an entire weekend.
A Modern University In An Ancient City
Utrecht University has more than 40,000 students in town during the school year and has been producing graduates since the 1640s. Unlike sleepy villages like Gouda and Haarlem, Utrecht is a bustling, active city. The town’s mixed demographic fosters a vibrant college town atmosphere, celebrating youth culture, artistic performances, and eclectic nightlife – without all the crime and tourist traps. Layer that reality onto a 2000-year-old settlement, and you’re left with a complex cityscape that is amongst the most diverse in the country. Locals appreciate that the town strikes a balance between the tranquility of quaint Dutch villages and the insane hustle of Amsterdam.

GRADUATION AT THE UNIVERSITY BUILDING
When The Sun Goes Down, The Dutch Go Out
After a good evening meal, a romantic walk through the lighted canals is a perfect nightcap. Or, if you’ve got the energy, maybe an exciting casino visit, a concert at Tivoli, or a show at the Beatrix Theater near the train station – there’s a lot to discover here.
The young and hip will love the many nightclubs and cafes, the thriving local music scene, and the enticing nightlife on the weekends – only Amsterdam has more cultural events in season. In a holdover from the 1960s, Thursday nights have become ‘Party Centraal’ in Utrecht afterhours – stores stay open late, bars even later. The soggy climate doesn’t seem to affect the festivities at all, as Utrecht’s streets are lined with merry-making at all hours, in all weather. But for those who’ve aged beyond the party scene, fear not!

THE DOM CITY'S BUSTLING NIGHTLIFE BRIGHTENS ANY HOLIDAY
A Town For Old & Young Alike
Families will enjoy the canal boats, climbing the Dom Toren, the old train depot and the Speelklok music museum, the cool ‘DomUnder’ experience, and the many parks and activities available. Children will discover that this is the hometown of ‘Miffy’ (Nijntje in Dutch), the famous cartoon bunny created by local artist Dick Bruna, and the focus of the Nijntje Museum, which is completely dedicated to the cute little rabbit and his friends. Teens will love the diverse nightlife here – with karaoke cafes, bumper cars, bouldering clubs, laser tag, escape rooms, video arcades, and sports of all types. Boredom is not an option.

ANCIENT ROMAN RIVERBOAT
A Long & Fascinating History
Curious academic types can take an incredible historical journey here, with compelling ancient ruins, classic castles, wharf canals, historic forts, and great churches from the last two millennia, all waiting to be discovered. Of course, Utrecht University’s spectacular library will be of interest, as will the Post Utrecht, the city archives and the huge University Science Museum with its extensive collection. Further afield, scholars of ancient history may be surprised at the size and scope of the Hoge Woerd Castellem – a giant collection of local Roman artifacts from the 1st century including a perfectly preserved 100-foot riverboat that’s two thousand years old.

THE OLD CANALS ARE HOME TO OVER 200 RESTAURANTS
A Feast for the Senses
Mature folks and couples can savor wonderful restaurants on the grachts (canals) and fascinating ‘people watching’ from more than 200 cafes citywide. Take time to appreciate the colorful weekly flower market, the fragrant botanical gardens, the many antique fairs, unique shops, and upmarket storefronts downtown. On the Old Canal, there are over 50 vintage and specialty shops alone, perfect for an afternoon stroll with a partner.
With all this in mind, a weekend getaway is recommended for this destination, as there is simply too much to experience in one day, no matter what your interests are.
