Welcome To The Dutch City Of Cheese

Gouda, a charming small city in the Netherlands, is a popular day trip for tourists exploring the real Netherlands. Known for its rich history, elegant cathedral, picturesque canals, and of course world-famous cheese, Gouda offers a delightful experience for visitors of all ages.

The town was founded by the Van der Goude family in the 12th century, who built a castle near the rivers Gouwe and Hollandse IJssel and created a village at the fork.  The outpost became an important trading center for spinning cloth, brewing beer, and candle making in the Middle Ages.  Ultimately, the city became the center of the Dutch cheese trade during the Renaissance and doubled its population.  In 2022 residents celebrated 750 years of ‘city rights’, granted by Earl Floris the Fifth in 1272.

Gouda’s Famous Cheese Market

One of the highlights of Gouda is the Gouda Cheese Market, a centuries-old tradition that takes place every Thursday morning from April to August. Here, you can witness the age-old cheese weighing and trading rituals, as well as indulge in a variety of delicious cheeses. The market is a feast for the senses, with the aroma of freshly made cheese filling the air and the vibrant colors of the cheese wheels creating a visual spectacle.

Saint John’s Church – Gouda Cathedral

Aside from the cheese market, the most popular attraction in Gouda is the St. John’s Church, also known as the Gouda Cathedral. This stunning Gothic church is famous for its 72 magnificent stained-glass windows. These ‘Gouda Windows’ of biblical scenes are called the most beautiful in Europe, and no other church in the world has so much original sixteenth-century glasswork. After a tour of the nave, climb to the top of the church tower for a panoramic view of the city, and marvel at the beauty of this quaint perfect Dutch village.
